Lord Denham has given notice he will retire next Monday, bringing to an end 72 years of membership of the House of Lords.
Under s. 2 of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014, a member who does not attend any sitting of the House of Lords in a session which lasts longer than six months, ceases to be a member. The current session began in December 2019 and will be ended next Thursday. The following members appear not to have attended any sitting, nor taken leave of absence:
Hanningfield, L. (Non-afl) Lawson of Blaby, L. (C) Rogers of Riverside, L. (Lab) Sugar, L. (XB)
They've got four days next week to preserve their membership.

Never quite sure whether this should be here, in the RIP thread, or both, but the death of Conservative Peer Baroness O’Cathain has been announced.
There’s also a by-election amongst the Hereditaries following the retirement today of the longest serving member of the House, the 2nd Baron Denham, who in his 72 years service was HoL Chief Whip throughout the Thatcher/Major years, Deputy Chief Whip in the Heath government (from 1971), and a Whip in the Macmillan, Douglas-Home (1961-64) and Heath (1970-71) administrations.

There are five Lords byelections pending, and they look likely to resume quite soon. Three Conservatives, one Crossbencher, and one Labour peer to be elected.

Presumably you mean that there are 5 vacancies, in which case the 3 Conservative ones could be elected by STV rather than 3 separate AV elections.

Not quite, Lord Elton and the Countess of Mar were in the group elected by the whole House, and so, potentially, that’s a free-for-all with no Party restrictions, and the (s)electorate will be all the remaining Hereditaries. Although the Earl of Selbourne had resigned the Conservative Whip and was sitting as a Non Affiliated member at the time of his death as he was elected a Conservative he will be replaced by the a vote amongst the exempted Conservatives. lordslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/lln-2018-0129/

He had retired from the Lords on 31 January 2019 so he wasn't a member when he died.

What do we reckon the prospects of Lawson, Rogers, White and Surralun turning up are?

Who's the longest serving peer now that Denham has retired? And who else is left from Macmillan's government?

Lord Trefgarne, who has been a member since his 21st birthday in 1962 (he had succeeded to his peerage at the age of 19). He is still only 80 so could go on for a while yet.
Longest serving life peer is Baroness Masham of of Ilton (1970).

Who's the longest serving peer now that Denham has retired? And who else is left from Macmillan's government? Lord Trefgarne - took the oath 3 July 1962. Followed by two others from the following year - Viscount Ullswater (24 July 1963) and Lord Selsdon (30 July 1963). Selsdon has not yet taken the oath in this Parliament so is at risk of losing his right to sit. Those three are the only members left from the Macmillan or Douglas-Home era.

Incidentally both Lord Lawson of Blaby and Lord Hanningfield took leave of absence yesterday. No appearance by Rogers or Sugar.
