+1 Baroness Hallett (a top Lord of Appeal) introduced today. I assume she will be non-affiliated.
Correction - she is Crossbench.

As a general rule, the non-affiliated peers were previously part of party groups and then resigned or been suspended for various reasons. The crossbench peers are "neutral" and haven't any public political affiliation.
Having said that, there are some exceptions, for example Lord Alton and Lord Dykes are both former MPs and both sit in the crossbench group.

Hugh Dykes is one of those 'I'd forgotten about him' figures.

Just had dinner with him (or at least next to him).
The Crossbench is an organised group with a Convenor which sends out information on business etc to its members, and holds a weekly meeting. It does not issue a whip.
Non-affiliated means "on your own". Both designations span the political spectrum and there is a certain amount of unofficial "soft whipping" by the parties of X-bench and Non-A members with appropriate political positions, some of it issue by issue.
Meanwhile... Crossbencher the Earl of Listowel has been granted leave of absence for the rest of this Parliament. There are rumours that there are going to be around 30 new peers appointed, around 20 Conservative and 8 Labour. So much for cutting the size of the House.

Today the following affirmed or took the oath: Chelmsford, Bp. Chadlington, L. Prescott, L. The latter looked to have recovered physically from his stroke but to be experiencing aphasia. I didn't quite know what "aphasia" meant (I think I assumed it meant lopsided or asymmetric) but now that I have watched the relevant clip I see what you mean.

Bness (Angie) Harris of Richmond is recovering from an operation. Lord (Ben) Stoneham of Droxford is the LD chief Whip and has certainly signed in. The Duke of Norfolk is the Earl Marshal of England and one of the two holders of genuinely hereditary positions in the House. Doesn't come except when he has to do so. Lord (Richard) Rogers of Riverside is the architect, doesn't come much (last voted on the EU Withdrawal Bill last June and last spoke in 2015. Some others I've not seen for a bit.

Well, rumours are 20ish Tories and 8ish Labour. So much for reducing the size of the Lords, and areal kick in the teeth for the people in the Lords who have been working hard to achieve a reduction in size.

Which peers have been campaigning for that? I didn't know it was a popular cause in their lordship's house.

It would be good to clear out some of the dead wood. There's a way you can contribute to that goal of course, if you feel so strongly about it...
