I no longer have much up to date local knowledge, but presumably the Tories must have carried most wards in WBE and WBW. Anyone know if they are following this up and expecting gains, or do they not have the infrastructure? When I was first on the council, there were 20 odd Tories, most of whom were elected in the landslide of 1992, and were all swept away again in 95/96. Several of them had been as surprised as anyone else to get elected in 92, and some literally never spoke! At least this time they'd presumably have some warning of success

I wouldn't rule out some Tory gains here factoring in the General Election now three of the four constituencies have Tory MP's. Areas like Blackheath, Charloment and Grove Vale, Tipton Green, Princes End and Great Barr will be their key target areas.
We'll still run the council, but this could see some opposition there for the first time in an age!

Might be worth looking at the seats they won in 1991 / 92 (which did include both Charlemont & Great Barr in 1992 if I remember rightly - 92 was the last Tory win in Charlemont before an outstanding, youthful, articulate, handsome, etc Lib Dem councillor captured it in 94, and I think there was one Tory we struggled to get rid of in GB who won in both 88 and 92)

Might be worth looking at the seats they won in 1991 / 92 (which did include both Charlemont & Great Barr in 1992 if I remember rightly - 92 was the last Tory win in Charlemont before an outstanding, youthful, articulate, handsome, etc Lib Dem councillor captured it in 94, and I think there was one Tory we struggled to get rid of in GB who won in both 88 and 92) I hear said sometime councillor is still relatively youthful and handsome- so must have been embryonic or twinkling in 1992, not to mention Adonis-like (not that Adonis...) |
