That sounds rather like the creation of Wythenshawe in the late 1940s and 1950s! Yep, and Hattersley, Gamesley, Partington, Oldfield Brow, Colshaw Farm... Oh dear what can the matter be, Some silly bugger has moved us to Hattersley, We've been at Hatterley three weeks on Saturday. Oh I wish we weren't here.

I feel I need to object to Oldfield Brow being on that list! It was quite a savvy piece of philanthropy by the Earl of Stamford to sell the land to Altrincham council for a pittance, with conditions attached. It was on higher ground out of the smog but still accessible to the then-vast industrial employment in Broadheath.

Interestingly, a similar type of scheme is also happening down in Henley (on-Thames),a local prominent landowning Henley family have a field who they want to give to the community for social housing free of charge.
