Calderdale also has the dubious distinction of containing one of Britain's number one 'Twat-towns' . These are places which are intrinsically appealing aesthetically or historically but are populated by pretentious wankers , vegans , self-styled alternative lifestylers and other gimps. I do really like Hebden Bridge though ; which probably says more about me than anything else . File me under 'pretentious wanker'. I’m currently in Hebden Bridge. In fact I’m loitering outside the “Valley Organic Workers Co-Operative”. It looks very woke indeed, as does the Levain Sour Dough Bakery next door, where the other half is shopping (my eyes rolled - *how* much for a loaf of bread?! so I was sent outside). The “Free Palestine” stand was already set up around the corner - and this is a Sunday morning. I’m guessing this place is very, very comfortable with Corbyn’s Labour.... I know some people in their 60s who has lived all their lives in Hebden Bridge, and are very much ‘ straight talking Yorkshire’. They didn’t like what Hebden Bridge had become and moved to Ilkley last year.

Andrewp, I fear that Ilkley has tendencies that are seeing it move in a hebden bridge direction; albeit from more upper class origins . I recommend Ripon as a relatively salubrious but woke-free alternative!

I wouldn’t exactly call Ilkley ‘straight taking Yorkshire’ - it’s exceedingly posh and pretentious in its own way.
Besides, you shouldn’t be basing where to live on the political leanings of the residents.

A Momentum member was trying to dissuade a friend of mine from voting LbDem tactically, and his clinching argument was to suggest that he moved to a Labour constituency if he wanted to be represented by someone who wasn't a Tory.

The average inhabitant of Ripon neither has the need or desire to venture beyond its boundaries. There is good reason why the railway service disappeared many decades ago.

Woke suburbia, here's what to do with you: "Run with the dogs tonight..." (as woke suburbia gets bombed into oblivion)

Piss off, you anti-semitic piece of shit. Three day ban for personal abuse. You are becoming closer to having done unto you, figuratively if not literally, what Jolyon Maughan tweeted that he'd done to another Sionnach on Boxing Day. Banhammers are more humane.

It is also shit. Which is sad, as it is architecturally magnificent. Very sad. A 'Jewel of the North' 30 years ago and now...dump is too polite. Nice when your coinings come back to you I moved to the Jewel in 84 so go back 36 years. Its worth remembering that the Bradford District covers a lot more than just the City - I believe it is the most rural metropolitan district or something. Anyway, it's fair to say that the place suffered significant decline over the early years of my residence but I honestly believe it has turned the corner. Broadway and the City park do seem to be bringing more people back into the centre. As pointed out above the architecture is brilliant, and just needs to be sympathetically exposed. And of course all the great bits of the wider district are there as always (and not just the Brontes)

I used to work at the Royal Mail sorting post and you saw ‘Menston nr Leeds’ a lot, but never ‘Menston nr Bradford’.
