Bizarre ‘Central’ ward name. There must be a better alternative.

Bizarre ‘Central’ ward name. There must be a better alternative. How about 'Union Chapel'? Could call it 'Station' as Highbury and Islington station is a nice focus. Or 'Paradise Park'?

'Central' Ah see that was already commented on. On the up side, Tufnell Park is a good name

There was a Station ward before 1978 which I think covered an area in Finsbury Park (possibly around that station). There are so many stations in Islington, it's not much more use as a name than Central or all the Saints they still insist on using

Westminster boundary changes were due to be announced today but there is nothing on LGBCE website yet.

St Mary’s is being used in a ward name elsewhere in the Borough.
Paradise Park and Highbury Corner?
Or alternatively ditch the ward pattern, if the ward doesn’t really fit a particular community identity.

The submissions from the first round of consultation on warding arrangements are all available on the LGBCE website so you can see exactly what the Conservative and Labour submissions were. www.lgbce.org.uk/all-reviews/greater-london/greater-london/westminster

Upper Street forms the old boundary between Barnsbury and Canonbury so this ward falls between the cracks. Union Chapel is a good shout. The parish that corresponds to the ward was called Holloway Chapel but that would be confusing.

Oh so we are already at that stage of the process. -Why the delay till September then? The Review Officer left the LGBCE and a new one had to be appointed. The original timetable was set up before the European Parliament elections were confirmed which led to some pressure for a delay anyway.

Or alternatively ditch the ward pattern, if the ward doesn’t really fit a particular community identity. Given Islington is a densely populated patchwork of social housing and expensive owner occupied it is questionable whether there are many identifiable geographical communities large enough to make a ward. My view is minimum change needed to equalise ward sizes is the best approach as I can't see a compelling reason to do otherwise.

Islington is getting an extra ward and this is it. The other wards do indeed mostly get minimal change, although this is obviously greater for those neighbouring the new ward, plus the ward straddling the City Road. Inevitably the new ward is “bits left over”. I’d call it Highbury Corner, and rename the Highbury ward as Highbury Fields to avoid confusion. Generally the ward pattern looks sensible to me.

They've gone all three member presumably? Always causes some horrible messes. Can you explain your thinking re: good news for Labour?

They've gone all three member presumably? Always causes some horrible messes. Can you explain your thinking re: good news for Labour? They've gone all three member yes, which necessitates some sort of horrible ward in that part of the borough. Interesting they've gone for linking the villages with the parts of Brierfield with best geographical and road links, rather than whatever other criteria might have been used to draw the county boundaries there. Perhaps brillant was an overstatement, but assuming no unusual results in Nelson (far from guaranteed at the moment), Labour currently have 19 seats that should be safe (though only currently hold 16), with 25 needed for a majority - they need 6 more seats in 2, or more likely 3 wards. On the new boundaries they get 15 of the 33 seats (assuming Brierfield West would be safe Labour), only needing to split one other ward to win a majority, which is not harder to win than any of the current target wards. Nelson might scupper their chances in the near future.
