Liberal Democrat candidate not at the count due to "longstanding commitment" Don't know why we said anything. Plenty of alsoran council candidates don't get up on the stage for the result and no one bats an eyelid. Famously our Copnor by-election candidate in 2008 missed the count in Portsmouth thanks to a similar longstanding commitment. In that case though he won by 900 votes and his daughters delivered his acceptance speech...

By-elections are just more showy.
