If UKIP do take second place it will confirm the recognition factor of the public. There must be a lot of people who still think Farage is its leader, and have never heard of the Brexit Party - which wouldn't be good news for Farage. With the benefit of hindsight he would have been better staying on as UKIP leader and exerting greater influence on government policy instead of declaring "mission accomplished" as soon as the referendum result was known.

Given that Brexit weren't running, we can't tell what the impact of Farage appearing in the constituency etc would have been. I think it's the core message that appeals here rather than the leader.

I would class 37.1% as a fairly respectable turnout for a by-election. Remember the 19% turnout in Leeds Central in 1999?

Turnout 37.1%. Not rock bottom by any means. Harder to get a really low turnout these days with the prevalence of postal votes.

BBC are speculating endlessly about the cause of low turnout - without mentioning how many people considered this a forgone conclusion, the shit weather, the previous low turnouts in the constituency, or the fact that it isn't really that low.

Given the number of candidates in Newport West I was expecting a turnout of 45-50%, although Brexit coverage has completely overshadowed it.

Should we expect a result relatively soon?

I didn't think by-election coverage could get much worse, but if they're going on about this being a low turnout it shows they haven't been studying by-elections very carefully.

Ian Craig from the South Wales Argus says that the counters appear to have stopped counting.

Neil Hamilton thinks George Soros could be funding a campaign in Newport West LOL I would say he is getting his excuses in early, but after the voting has finished is a little late. At least he's a proud Woolfe-ian UKIPPer when it comes to timing.
