In 1951 the ÖVP-candidate was PM in UpperA., what gave him an extra bounce. In 2004 she had grown up in Salzburg (small plus) and at that time we had a coalition of ÖVP with FPÖ federally, what explains the comparatively strong result for ÖVP in Carinthia.

ÖVP&FPÖ have always had a SeatMajority in parliament (except the 1970ies); nonetheless their candidates have always lost in the RunOffs of the PresidentialElections (less 1986 and 1992). Here is a map comparing the combined %-shares of ÖVP&FPÖ in rounds I and II: Demonstrating a very strong CorRelation with the WdU, so many VdU-voters opted for the SPÖ-candidate or stood at home. In later elections the picture is less clear.

Striking is, that the ÖVP/FPÖ-candidates usually underperformed in EastStyria & InnViertel (=western UpperA.), although especially in these areas lots of german-nationalistic & liberal farmers and bourgeois were after 1945 absorbed by ÖVP: The german-nationalistic & liberal/nonclerical farmers ("LandBund") alone (in 1927): Plus the german-nationalistic & liberal/anticlerical bourgeoisie ("GroßDeutscheVolksPartei/GDVP"): Plus the NationalSocialists: Plus the authoritarian "HeimBlock/HB":
