Never trust a pub with a flat roof. They have a place. I've been in a lock-in in such a pub. In Consett. Never drink in small towns in the North East of England.

My Grandad took my Mother at one point or other in her childhood to every town over a certain size in Co. Durham outside its parts of Teesside (which he insisted didn't count) as it was Important for her to see and know the county as it was before it ceased to be itself from his perspective... except for Consett, which he considered to be a rare black spot of immorality and vice.

Were they in a party before going Indy? *was he Asian councillors have been misgendered on here before now, due to their names sometimes making it unclear to outsiders if they are male or female. So in this case, "they" was arguably perfectly apposite

They have some land and keep horses. I think it hosts a large Newcastle commuter population these days, but I wouldn't call it upmarket. Hexham maybe, but not Consett.

My remarks are couched on experiences that are decades old I fully admit. But I feel Hexham to be relatively pleasant and with good facilities, whereas Consett seemed to me to be a remote, windy, wet, unpleasant, gritty, awful, concrete hell hole with nothing at all to recommend it.

I tend to agree with your assessment, but maybe we're being slightly unfair to the people of Consett and it has markedly improved.

Also a commuter population to Durham since it is easy to commute to both Newcastle and Durham from Consett. There has been a lot of new housing on the outskirts of the town. With regards to the main town itself, the town centre is still downmarket and I rarely visit it when I go up to visit my mother. It's not as bad as 20 to 30 years ago but still not great. Some parts are still fairly grotty and wpuld not feel comfortable walking through them at night. There are affluent areas near by (Shotley Bridge, Lanchester) that are very nice. Those areas are a bit more comparable to Hexham or Corbridge but Hexham has more to do and Corbridge is definitely more affluent.

They have some land and keep horses. Consett proper, no. Much is ungentrifyable cheap Victorian terraces for steelworkers. Obviously the surrounding area you'll be able to get land cheap, and maybe has started to slightly move up. It has Liberal Democrat (Consett north and south) and Tory (delves lane) councillors. There are nicer areas on the edge like castleside.
