Last May, four Conservative councillors on East Staffordshire Borough Council resigned the whip and formed an Independent Group. Tonight they voted with Labour, passing a motion of no confidence in the Conservative leadership, removing the Leader, and electing Labour group leader Julian Mott as the new Leader of the Council.

We've already had her - noted last week. Although I admit it is easy to lose count given how many have gone.

The SLP are bit like Proton cars- you vaguely remember them, and you see something of them every so often, but they're a total irrelevance to anyone who doesn't have a direct involvement.

My first thought on reading the story was "Good lord, do the SLP atill exist?".

My first thought on reading the story was "Good lord, do the SLP atill exist?". The Graun have an article by John Harris today describing Scargill as "a virtual recluse" who they "managed to find", ignoring the fact that he's a) been involved in a high-profile court case of late and b) everyone knows he lives in the Barbican.

Given he is 76 he quite possibly is not out and about as much so recluse is journalistese. His location is not that hard to find. I suspect that @devilincarnate is very close to accurate for the context and that the journo could have found it on the Guardian's own website.

Yeah, but at least they didn't have the cheek to try and run the council for 5 months first!

I had a look at this myself, and couldn't find any evidence of the SLP ever having had any councillors, even by defection. I've gone with that line on my blogpost on the defection, so if anyone knows otherwise please correct me. blog.englishelections.org.uk/2014/03/defection-watch-socialist-labour-get.html
