Does Margetts have any factional notoriety? We can all make evidence-free claims about corruption (though the NEC has no involvement in local council selections) but there are in fact other reasons that people fail their panel interviews. Yup, and within Momentum itself as well.

"Barrie Margetts (FM): In Southampton, we established a ‘Labour Grassroots’ group to reach out and support older people to stay in their own homes by helping them look after their gardens- this had been shown in other cities to reduce loneliness and isolation, and also to improve health and wellbeing and to reduce demands on the NHS." This is the kind of stuff we don't talk enough about when we obsess over policy, internal elections, selections, etc.

The ward I represented for 12 years had the largest proportion of pensioners of any in the Cambridgeshire. Many still had responsibility for gardens. I persuaded the council to start a small assistance scheme. It was rapidly oversubscribed and not just because they kept gardens under some control.

We're often out with bin bags collecting rubbish. A lot of people don't think we should do it because it's a service councils should do. I'm of the view we shouldn't let rubbish pile in the streets because the council can't afford to clean it up.

Momentum were trying to set themselves up as some sort of local political welfare organisation like we see in certain countries.
Picking up rubbish is indeed a good thing to do and good politics. Although always wear good gloves.

There are charities for that sort of thing and better done by them imho. There is also a fair amount of duplication (as there was during lockdown for instance).

ha The problem is when people are in need, what they need is a labour government but what they seek out is charity. Even when labour councillors do huge amounts of work for people, people say to me 'Mike and Tony are wonderful councillors and done so much for me, but labour does nothing for me'. Honestly makes you want to cry

Honestly makes you want to cry Honestly I'd take the win. If people vote for Mike and Tony because they are wonderful councillors that's good enough whether or not they would put up a poster or not. The vote counts exactly the same.
And while all charities are not perfect (the term is too broad for that ever to be true) I worry about people in the party being anti charity because 'it isn't socialism'.

It can be really difficult when there's conflicting interest with the council. Locally, Labour initially tried to piece together an ad hoc group of people to help out during the pandemic when the already existing VCS led community hub had already been coordinating with the council to do just that. Fortunately people gravitated to the already existing scheme and we had national recognition for our coordinated response, but it just goes to show that if you try to gazump well working, existing schemes that you can end up with things falling apart if you're not careful. NB, politicians of all parties all joined the VCS led scheme eventually and it worked extremely well.

I did take that view for a very long time to be fair. To the point I wouldn't mention the party name on the door step. But what then happens is what's happened to the party in St Albans. Really good councillors retire and there isn't really anyone to fill the gap and the labour brand isn't enough to carry new people. I agree about charity, too often members say we shouldn't collect rubbish because we're doing a council service on the cheap but if we don't it won't get done

My brother and I have been clearing my Mum's house to help her downsize, and today we stood in the back yard and stared at the ""garden"" and pondered aloud: well, should we tackle it or just leave it to the new owners. It probably says something that the estate agents declined to photograph it.

If he seriously thinks Kier Starmer is going to end culture war he needs his head checking. It is a serious issue but labour have been guilty of engaging in culture wars as much as the tories.

That was a remark for the Metropolitan Labour elite consumption to make himself fit in and to try and convince himself that there are cohate reasons for his switch other that just being utterly pissed off with a party that has given away every advantage and every opportunity by getting just about every political decision for three year as wrong as they can and then seeking non-conservative ways of actively seeking to make it all even worse.

On both sides. The trans issue is on the worst examples.
