I lived in Keswick for a lot of the 1990s and actually found that there was a a great deal of acceptance of 'Cumbria' as a unit throughout the area. Much more so that the other artificial constructs such as Avon or Cleveland. As you say, maybe less so in Sedbergh, which had been taken out of the County That God Forgot About. Nowt's ever reet with them. Was "Cumbria" not seen as a takeover of the other constituent areas by Cumberland? If so, it should not be surprising if there was no resentment from the town where Cumberland pencils came from. I honestly don't think that the notion of Cumbria is even resented by the people of Westmorland. Along the Furness coast it's still not fully accepted. That's lot to do with many of the residents there having come from Lancashire and the fact that the county seat is now miles (and hours) away. In Sedbergh they won't be content until they're in the same county again as Middlesbrough and Saddleworth.

Seriously, West Craven longs to be back under the white rose again, and they all still support Yorkshire CCC.

Birmingham has 4, possibly, 5 universities, there being University of Birmingham (the redbrick one), Aston (the mid-20th century one), Birmingham City University (the former poly), and Newman University (former Catholic teacher training college now upgraded). The question mark is over University College Birmingham, once the College of Food and Domestic Arts (it has had other names since), as I'm not sure whether it awards its own degrees. I can confirm it does, because I went to its graduation ceremony a few weeks ago, as my middle daughter Katie graduated from there (held over from 2020) in Baking & Nutrition. And now works in the R&D department of Fiona Cairns, the baking company that makes the Royal wedding cakes, or William and Kate's at least, as well as the cakes for Harrods and Waitrose. It's great when she comes back at weekends after a week spent trying out new ideas for products I didn't know that training in making cakes gets you a degree these days. Obviously the training is good, and your daughter has a good job as a result. But I'm not sure why this needs to be validated with a degree. That's one of the problems with Britain. We simply don't value skills properly.

Well, to be fair, it involved a bit more than making cakes. A fair bit of the science of nutrition and so on (I became an expert in the science of scone baking from reading Katie's dissertation). But there is a debate to be had on university education, what qualifies as a degree subject, and so on.

Or, "What do Gareth Southgate and the Chief Exec of Network Rail have in common?" Half the country thinks they could make a better job of it.

Any actual councillors or other notables defected ...? So, no, then Sorry if this idea is too radical for this site, but would it be possible to have a thread devoted to general councillors and other notable defections?

It isn't that the ideal is radical, and in theory it may even be good, it has just proven impossible to implement. If you want a forum where threads stay on topic I suggest you look elsewhere.

When Barrow failed to get re-election, they were in Lancashire IIRC. Carlisle was then in Cumberland. Please don't tell people in Barrow they're not in Lancashire. They will be cast into the Furness of hell?

Great idea - then we could use it to discuss railways and pubs... How about a compromise? This pub in Bournemouth has a new landlord. That's kind of like a defection. Now we only need a train driver fed up of conditions at one company and deciding to switch to another and we are back on track. It could signal the beginning of a new age for this thread.
