It is notable that Donky residents voted in a referendum NOT to abolish the mayoralty whilst nearly everywhere else they've voted not to hve one...

Unclear what his next move will be, since he rejects the three main parties but also says he does not want to stand as an Independent. So basically what he's looking for is the ego-trip of being an independant whilst having a party behind him to do all the donkey work? Or am I missing something?

Another classic example in support of banning politicians from social media, especially when they think they're being funny.

Another classic example in support of banning politicians from social media, especially when they think they're being funny. well, if you think that would help. We could have professional politicians that learned how to use social media at uni in their course. They would use twitter to only in approved manners, to welcome the council's announcement, to slam the government heartless cuts, to support the local football team Those of us with no respect for them can continue to use social media to encourage their neighbours cats to dump in their garden, thereby disqualifying ourselves from office. Nice one boogie, love the above post. However one or two councils have leaderships that are control freaks so your satire might have some truth about it! I always go by one rule on social media 'Don't post it if you know it will get you into trouble if it is seen by a lot of people'.

My CLP produced some draft guidelines for us of social media, which essentially pointed out that most people's twitter followers would be there political opponents and that people should ask themselves the question: "Would I post this whilst sober?" It's a good policy in principle, but I'm not sure even those who wrote it adhere to the guidelines particularly well.

I always think that with social media, the question to ask oneself is "how would this look on the front page of the local paper?" Our Council's elected member development programme includes a module on the use of social media but it was cancelled because nobody turned up. I think there are probably quite a few who have never heard of Twitter or Facebook and there is at least one who doesn't even use a computer. We have councillors in Cheshire who are still grappling with the idea of electricity. You can see them peering into sockets worrying that something might leak.

I can think of one LD council leader of my acquaintance who trident's description applied to. If I wanted to send them something that was indiscreet to put in front of council officers I either printed it out and delivered it personally or rang their spouse to receive it. And they were not prehistoric.

There are some very aged-looking Tory councillors on Cheshire East's website! We did have one member who used to insist that their e-mails were printed out by Member Services and posted to their home address, or that people e-mail their spouse who was more IT-literate. This individual did eventually manage to operate a Blackberry! We had one whose email was operated by his granddaughter for a while. She supported another party

Exactly. Although I do not intend to keep it up to date on that front. I wish the avatar gave a rather thinner edge of hair. It is a little overstated!

Our new UKIP Clrr in Swale is somewhat in this league - no computer, struggles to use the one he has in the Council office, and whilst he has a blacberry, cannot use it properly or receive calls on it... he will often ring me from his home number having been out and about, to ask a question and then go out again...

Not a defection but a mystery . Councillor Anniina Davie Winton East on Bournemouth UA seems to have vanished . She has not been seen since December although she did send apologies for non attendance of the January council meeting . Her last place of residence seems to be empty and neither of her 2 fellow ward councillors have knowledge of her whereabouts . See the Bournemouth Echo for the story .

Conservative Central Office sent out by e-mail to all councillors a document on "The Liberal Democrats: Telling the Truth About Them" (or something similar - it was loads of stuff with which to attack us). Member Services dutifully printed off the 48 pages for Cllr XXXXX, and put it in the out-tray. A few hours later they sorted the out-tray, saw a document labelled "The Liberal Democrats" and put it in our pigeon hole. Not sure the Conservatives ever worked out why we were so well prepared for their attacks on us!

For the record, Joy Bratherton former Liberal Group Leader on Crewe & Nantwich BC (councillor 1982-90, 2004-09) will be contesting the Crewe Town Council election for the Labour Party.

Two things you always have to watch out for with e-mails!

A friend of mine who was working for Aberdeen University in the 1990s and sent an email to a colleague complaining about his head of department. This got a bit heated and he signed off with 'Sack the Bitch'! Inadvertently he sent it to an international mailing list with about 250 members. Subsequently he received a lot of stick for this one!
