As far as I know, there isn't any literature on how candidates name length affects the vote. There are studies that suggest that a candidates surname affects voter choice - people with alphabetical names go at the top of the ballot and get more votes. That reminds me of my time at the University of Manchester. All student union elections had the candidates in alphabetical order. Or the did until the Internal Vice President (who was responsible for all elections) discovered a forgotten rule that in alternate elections the order would be flipped to reverse alphabetical. His name was Dave Watson! That does seem quite a sensible rule though......

When I ran for the Standing Committee of the Oxford Union last term I went from being 4th on the ballot to 7th owing to another candidate being left off first time.

For Dukakis to win he would’ve had to flip the following states:
California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Vermont.
A tall order to say the least. It would’ve given him 272 Electoral Votes.

Notable that quite a few states that *did* go Democrat in 1992 are not on that list.

Came within 0.6% of winning California, which would have made it more respectable.

Notable that quite a few states that *did* go Democrat in 1992 are not on that list. In 1992 one could have talked of a "Red Wall" * of 21 states that had voted Republican in all of the last six elections and seemed to give the GOP a firm advantage in the electoral college with 191 reliable votes, compared the Democrats with just 3. In 1992 Bill Clinton won nine of these states, comprising 118 electoral votes, and several of the largest have never come back. (* Well okay not in those terms as both "red = Republican" and "wall" came later. But the supposed lock was much assumed.)

Going into 1992, New Hampshire was a more reliably Republican state than many that Bush and Dole would go on to win like North Carolina and Virginia.
