The results of decades of terrible foreign policy and the ridiculous "retrocession".
Hopefully the West smells the coffee soon and decides to take action against Chinese propaganda and indulge in anti-Chinese government propaganda (how about Tienanmen memorials in public spaces and parks in view of China's embassies and consulates?). Also, support to Taiwan.

I used to really pay attention to HK, but I can't anymore. Seeing it die is painful. I dread the day they tear down the goddess of democracy statue at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, we all know it's going to happen one day. I'll just leave this here. My thoughts are with Hong Kongers at this time. Two days later, it has happened. The Goddess of Democracy is gone.

In all honesty, Carrie Lam is one of the worst traitors in modern history. She has systematically, publically and unashamedly betrayed her own people and sold them into the service of a totalitarian regime.

I support traval bans and banking bans in all Western countries on both her and every candidate in those socalled elections. Thoughts should also be given on a ban with banking with Hong Kong. The likes of HSBC must choose between the West and China.

Wouldn't that be interfering with the internal processes of a foreign country?
Hong Kong isn't our, it hasn't been since it was handed back, we really need to get that into our heads. Plus it was never really a democracy under us anyway, so all this chomping at the bit is really a bit hypocritical.

UK is the signatory of the retrocession treaty, who said the systems who be held in place for 50 years. As far as I know, 1997+50=2047. In any case, action needs to be taken to cripple China, unless you want the West to be Chinese puppets in a few generations.

That's a different matter to Hong Kong though.
Plus crippling a nation is never sensible. Counteracting China's current path yes, crippling China, no.

Local elections in Hong Kong today. All non-members of the Communist Party have been banned from running.
Sadly, there will be a weak to inexistant response from Western governments, while total sanctions (ban from entry and seizure of any Western asset from any candidate) should have applied.

I've been following it on the news. It's an election-type event. Just look at the wiki page list of parties. Pro-Beijing battling it out with Pro-Beijing and Pro-Beijing vs Pro-Beijing, with Pro-Beijing bringing up the rear.

There are 18 district councils (think of them as London Boroughs). There are 470 council seats, around 28 seats on each council. There are 88 elected seats in 2-member wards, about four on each council. Yes, 88 out of 470. 382 are appointed by the government, either directly or indirectly. The number of candidates is also drastically lower, as the government has legislated so that anybody interested in democractic representation is banned from standing for election. The parties represented by candiates, and their approximate position, approximately in order of size/support, is: DAB (Pro-Beijing) essentially the TUC FTU (Pro-Beijing) essentially the Communist Party HK Liberal (Pro-Beijing) essentially the Conservative Party BPA (Pro-Beijing) essentially the CBI NPP (Pro-Beijing) essentially UNISON New Prospect (Pro-Beijing) Mainlanders In Hong Kong FLU (Pro-Beijing) more splitters from DAB (the other splitters have faded away) Round Table (Pro-Beijing) splitters from NPP PP (Pro-Beijing) splitters from Liberal, appear to be SDP Bauhina Party (Pro-Beijing) another Mainlanders party, internationalist, think pro-Euro Conservatives Path of Democracy (nonaligned) splitters from moderate wing of pro-democracy Civic Party
There seems to be a common thread.... Turnout at close of poll at 10:30pm local time was around 29%. The results will be known by about 6pm. Sorry, about 6am.
