John Biggs was elected Mayor of Tower Hamlets in the 2015 by-election (after losing in 2014) and simultaneously served as London Assembly Member for City & East until the 2016 Assembly elections.

If we’re on current/very recent, Gareth Snell remained on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council until the all-out elections last May, and Jack Brereton remains on Stoke City Council (I’m assuming he’s doing as did Snell and just letting his term expire).

There seem to be a lot of cases of newly elected MPs and Assembly Members sitting out the remainder of their council terms. When the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments were first elected a good number of Westminster MPs were elected and nearly all sat for both until 2001. Later on a number of MSPs and AMs were elected to Westminster and didn't trigger by-elections. (Has anyone been elected to one in a by-election and then continued to sit in the other until the regular elections for the first, triggering a by-election on a day voting is taking place anyway?)

IIRC johnhemming allowed his term on Birmingham City Council to expire after election to Westminster in 2005, and there was no by-election.
Going back a lot further, when I worked for West Midlands County Council, Cllr David Nellist was elected as MP for Coventry SE but did not stand down from the council, which was in any case abolished in 1986. But I note that he was subsequently elected to Coventry city council in 1988, prior to his departure from Parliament in 1992.

Ronnie Fearn, queen of Southport, retained his seat on Sefton Council throughout his time as the towns MP. John Pugh came back on to the council in the hope of stemming LibDem losses after retiring as an MP. Hasn't really worked so far.

Mind you given why the Tory resigned, and the lack of Labour organisation in that ward it wasn't a great surprise

Mind you given why the Tory resigned, and the lack of Labour organisation in that ward it wasn't a great surprise I think there’s similar with Mark Hunter on Stockport Council, but they might have got a second councillor now; my uncle (who’s 91) thinks he’s got two LD councillors in a Cheadle Hulme ward.

Britain should ban double jobbing of this type (e.g. being both a councillor and an MP simultaneously); many countries do not allow this e.g. the Republic of Ireland and Australia.

In the Jewel David Ward was reelected as a councillor after his GE loss, and his replacement, Imran Hussain remained on the council until his term espered a couple of years later (turned up once every 6 months iirc)

Equally in N-u-L, and as far as I can see there’s zilch in local media, and Newcastle Labour are coming into mainly Stoke North ahead of May’s all-out elections.

Chris in Newcastle is a friend & associate of mine. He has set his resignation date as January 31. Should this change I'll let you know. He has already announced it on social media Thanks, I must have missed it on Twitter where I follow him. CWCID although on different wings of the Party we’ve had a couple of good debates and come out the other side without blocking each other.

Yes I agree with finsobruce ! I first flagged up that likely vacancy as read it in an interview in the Evening Standard. He is a vicar moving to take up a new post in Camden or Brent if I recall correctly. Perhaps K&C Labour have asked him to hang on until 2020?

I'm not sure the Labour party could overrule the Church of England in this particular case, but it would be nice to know.
