Paris, London and Berlin are probably the top three, and there’s usually an Irish Catholic who wants Dublin (Clinton appointed one the JFK/RFK sisters) and I note former Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd is said to be angling for an Ambassadorship; given his Irish ancestry, Dublin seems a natural fit for him. Richard Allen is quite right though, Feinstein’s husband has had his own ethical troubles, and there’s no room for manoeuvre in a 50-50 Senate. Ahem... Who is right?

I thought of that too, but given that Biden is a Catholic I suspect there may be more than a few issues, good and bad, over the years. Wouldn't be a bad idea to offer the Vatican post to former senator Joe Donnelly; a nod to the pro-lifers who have stood by the Democrats and a significant figure in a post where a lot of soft diplomacy is used to major effect.

Two congressional special elections were held in Louisiana yesterday.
In the heavily Democratic second district (inner New Orleans and Baton Rouge), which was vacated when Cedric Richmond became a senior advisor the President Biden, two prominent state Senators Troy Carter (D) and Karen Carter Peterson (D) advanced to a run off with 36% and 23% respectively.
In the solidly Republican fifth district (rural NE), which was vacant due to the death of Rep-elect Luke Letlow in December, there was an outright win for Julia Letlow (R), widow of Luke, with 65% of the vote

Surely if he wants to give $44000 to Donald Trump, he's perfectly entitled to do so

Missouri’s open Senate seat in 2022 may just have a glimmer of light for the Democrats after former Governor Eric Greitens who was forced to resign amid allegations of misusing charitable records for campaign finance purposes and taking illicit explicit photographs of his mistress announced he was seeking the nomination to succeed the retiring Roy Blunt. Meanwhile in Alabama ultra Trump supporter, Rep Mo Brooks, has confirmed he will seek to replace retiring incumbent Richard Shelby.
Downballot in Georgia, Trumpian Rep Jody Hice has announced a primary challenge to Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger.

Third time lucky? It will be a Dem mid-term of course. I’d have thought Whitmer would be a much tougher opponent than either Stabenow or Peters. Mid-term elections can pull down strong incumbents, but is the GOP bench in Michigan so weak they need to keep going back to James?

To draw the final curtain on November 2020, Democrat Rita Hart has withdrawn her challenge before the House Administration Committee to the certification and seating of Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 2CD. Triple M will now serve until the 2022 elections in a District, pending redistricting, she won by just six votes.

Presumably Hart had been told that there was no way the election was going to be overturned and that if she forced Democratic members to take an uncomfortable vote she would not get so much as a Christmas card off the DCCC or leadership allied fundraisers in the future.

Added to the reality that more than enough Democrats had said they’d vote to uphold the certified results to guarantee her defeat she likely wanted to avoid the humiliation of losing a floor vote. As it is she does now have a good fundraising/campaigning issue should she decide to seek a rematch next.

Representative Alcee Hastings has died. He was a Democrat representing Florida's 20th district, which is a majority-black gerrymander including much of Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

He was re-elected with 78.67% in November, his first time under 80%, so pretty much a case of whoever wins the Democratic primary wins the seat. In the meantime the Dems majority in the House is reduced to five pending the winner of the all-Democratic run-off in Louisiana’s CD2 on 24 April.

The majority at the moment is six; 218 v 212, with 5 vacancies (FL-20, LA-02, NM-01, OH-11 and TX-06). LA-02 run off is on 24th April TX-06 special election (all party primary) is 1st May with a run off likely on a date yet to be determined. NM-01 special election on the 1st June OH-11 special primary on the 3rd August, special election on the 2nd November FL-20 TBC but probably similar to OH-11

Also can anyone give examples of pro-choice Republicans or pro-gun right democrats to test a theory I have. Charlie Baker for the GOP pro-choice. Joe Biden pro gun pre 1986 also anti choice pre 2006 ish plus supported the death penalty until the just before the 2020 election.

Big question for the forum. How many of these electoral contests were safe seats and can I have a cool source please. Louisiana is safe Democratic, only two Democrats have advanced to the run off. Ohio and Florida equally safe Democratic, Marcia Fudge and Alcee Hastings were getting 80+% of the vote (indeed in 2018 no Republican filed to run against Hastings). New Mexico is pretty safe Democratic; it was Republican until Heather Wilson vacated it to run for Senate in 2008, although she’d only held on by 861 votes in 2006. Since then the Democrats, Martin Heinrich and Deb Haaland have been around 60% apart from Heinrich’s 52% in the Republican tsunami of 2010. Most recently Biden carried the District 60-37 and Haaland was re-elected 58-42 last year. Texas is usually strongly Republican, electing Joe Barton easily for 34 years, but has got interesting; Trump only beat Biden 51-48 last year, and the late Ron Wright only won 53-45 in 2018 and 52-44 last year. There seems a feeling that his widow will garner enough of a sympathy vote to prevail, especially if Trump, who’s clearly not a plus in the District, keeps schtum. The Wikipedia page for each District is good for cold hard numbers, but finding a single source for the special elections is pretty near impossible given that Ohio is months away, Florida hasn’t got a date yet, and there’s little in the way of “action” in New Mexico yet. Louisiana is basically just in a who’s endorsing who phase leading up to the run off.

There will be another special election in Ohio, this time in the 15th district. Steve Stivers (R) has announced he will resign next month in order to become the head of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
