Out of interest was he a Covid denier? Just had a scroll through his Twitter and I’d say not; he opposed school closures, and advocated reopening pretty much everything immediately, but he also Tweeted tributes to a local police Lieutenant and Rep-elect Letlow, acknowledging both died from Covid, thanked healthcare workers for all their hard work during “the most challenging times”, and used his newsletter to encourage constituents to get vaccinated. Given that he had two previous bouts of lung cancer he was maybe aware of his own high risk.

David Perdue not running for the Georgia seat against Senator Warnock next year. A boost for the Democrats, as he was a strong threat with excellent name recognition in Georgia. Yes and No. He also ran a terrible campaign and lost a race as an incumbent that he should never have lost. For inexplicable reasons he ran to the hard right to appeal to the Trump voters who were always going to turn up and vote in November because of the Presidential race. Had he focussed his campaign on moderate suburban Republicans he would have easily surpassed 50% and avoided the run off. I have some sympathy for Loeffler who had to go hard right to defeat Doug Collins, Perdue had no reason to do so.

A possible 2024 candidate. DeSantis and Hawley vs Harris and Buttigieg isn't out of the question.

Charlie Crist. One of the oddest characters of modern US politics.

A lower-profile but more notable development is the introduction of GOP court-packing measures in AZ and MT. The 'institutional check' is one of many chocolate fireguards.

Hmmm - Trumpy Republican to be replaced by another Trumpy Republican in an ultra-safe Republican state.... it's not likely to change anything, I suspect. Unless they pick some real Marjorie Taylor Greene style loon of course - which might be fun in a weird kind of way...

My mistake! For some reason i remembered Johnson as being from Oklahoma...
Wisconsin could be very interesting indeed for a Rep without incumbency, especially after what is likely to be a brutal pro v anti Trumpist primary.

I wonder if Ron Kind will have a go for the Democrats. He did win reelection in a Trump District in 2020.
Former Governor Scott Walker could run for the Republicans.

Kind has said he’s considering, partly I think because he’s pretty pessimistic about coming out of redistricting unscathed. I think a few Democrats are keeping their powder dry until Johnson formally announces what he’s doing.

I would presume Rick Scott will attempt to persuade Sean Duffy or Mike Gallagher to run for Senate, if Ron Johnson retires.

Roy Blunt, Republican Senator from Missouri, is the latest to drop out of running in 2022.
