As I prepare to hand the baton over for the task of preparing this summaries of forthcoming elections, with just the single election on Maundy Thursday to come, I am looking back over the previous threads in the six years of the present forum, and how different people have set about it, often with a great deal more thoroughness than I could muster. I will have done about 25 threads in a little over half a year. Doktorb did a similar number to me, but with a great deal more to offer than I attempted. Our most distinguished predecessors, Maxque and Greatkingrat, both did 3 or 4 times as many. A lot of people have stepped in to the breach and done a few here and there when nobody else came forward, notably Andrew Teale and Robert Waller. A lot of you (dozens?) have made the odd intervention to mark usually a particular by-election they were interested in. Middleenglander has of course made his own particular and unique contributions without which the rest of us would have struggled a great deal more, and in the process has actually more threads than anyone except Maxque and Greatkingrat.
My own particular style has been to encourage a corporate effort and my lack of expertise and ability to make lots of errors have all contributed to that worthy end. A lot of you have helped me out / put me right when I was floundering. I hope in due course that might encourage more people to have a go for a while ( my thinking would be 6 months is probably a good stint) as it is a wonderful way to get up close to a whole range of by-elections in a way you probably don't if you merely browse this site, or similar ones or twitter, facebook and so on. Definitely something for relative newbies to consider!
