Just 3 by-elections this week so we can all relax- an Indy defence in Redcar and Cleveland , and a couple of Con defences in South Kesteven. This summary is in response to the request from izzyeviel, hardly necessary this time maybe, izzy, but I 'll try to get into the habit against the day when it all gets very complex again and the summary posting for each ward gets muddled up with a load of other stuff- which probably will have nothing to do with that weeks'elections, and so probably shouldn't be on the thread at all...

I had added the two Stamford elections here when I lost my broadband connection (snap, middleenglander) and it seems the break came just before all the text was saved, so I had to start again Anyway to try and please some people I have put all 3 elections together on the same post, if not on the OP, and broadband is fully back it seems.

Redcar &Cleveland: I think this one of the most unusual set of latest election results I can remember- looks as though this could be a real 4-way marginal and the local voters look remarkably fluid in their attachments and maybe more than usually inclined to vote for the candidate rather than the label. My prediction might be a Lib Dem gain as the party finishing bottom in one election seems to win next time round!

I think with respect, that the point about having the summary on the OP was not to refer to 'a couple' of unspecified by-elections in South Kesteven but to have all the summary information about each of the by-elections on the OP See here from a year ago for example vote-2012.proboards.com/post/469778/thread (although the maps are not necessary, they were a nice touch though). Obviously compliling results for several by-elections can be time consuming so I can see you not wanting to it all at one time, but you can of course edit posts so you could do one or two and then come back later and add others.

I said at the outset that there was no way I could do a job to compare with the brilliant way doktorb did it in his time "in charge", and I only stepped in to fill a hole short term. I am living with a domestic situation which is once again extremely stressful and I can only work in short bursts . If someone else would like to take over again , please do.

I believe I acknowledged that and this is why I suggested using the edit post function in order to assemble all the results into a single post without having to write it all in one sitting. Alternatively you could do what I often do when writing a very long post and write it in a Word document, save it and come back to it again later and the copy and paste the whole thing when it is finished - again easy to do in short bursts. There isn't a need to get defensive about it. I thought I was making a helpful suggestion. It isn't a big deal to me as I'm not participating in the prediction competition but if I was I would fine having the list of seats scattered across numerous posts, often with other posts in between them unhelpful. It was somebody else who highlighted the problem and I am offering a solution

@yellow peril - I also appreciate your efforts. I quite like the elections on separate posts.
You are never going to please everyone, so don't try. Just keep up the good work.

Trust me yellowperil these posts are both brilliant and terrible to do, I loved doing them until they became something of a "second job", taking as much time to do outside work as my actual employment! Those who do these things have our own ways and formats, a bit of tweaking here and there always happens. Keep it up!

My prediction might be a Lib Dem gain as the party finishing bottom in one election seems to win next time round! In the great scheme of things, there isn't actually a huge amount of change in votes switching from one party to another; what has happened here is that a relatively even split between three or four parties is accentuated by the tendency of the parties not to nominate full slates of candidates, resulting in the ward being split between 2 or 3 parties. That is good for people who believe in PR or balanced representation, but it is unusual that it doesn't seem to have incentivised the parties to have three candidates each.

It was somebody else who highlighted the problem and I am offering a solution I wasn't being defensive or reacting to your helpful suggestions unfavourably, just explaining my own position. I have sometimes used the edit post function to put the posts together and by hindsight should have done so on the very big weeks recently, but in a normal week I don't see anything wrong with a series of separate posts and some people have said they prefer them. I haven't tried to emulate doktorb (a) because I couldn't- I'm no doktorb (b)because I don't want to be in the position of making myself a "second job" as dok himself put it - I don't have to worry about paid employment, but my "other job" is 24/7 (c) I am not setting up to rival Andrew Teale or any of the other websites around - indeed I would do everything I can to encourage our own members to make full use of them. It is likely that my domestic situation will go on worsening, so I really think I should give due notice that I probably won't continue with this after the end of this month, which is a relatively quiet time for local by-elections to hand over. I tried to do this a little while ago, and then things got easier so I carried on, but the inevitable longterm downward trajectory of my situation catches up soon enough. Indeed I may have to reduce my posting in general to the occasional.

Yes I had not forgotten that kind offer when I first started suggesting I would not be able to continue -I managed a little while longer but I think now the time has come. I will try and cover March 22nd and then hand over for April which hopefully will be fairly light. Thank you. EditIt occurs to me that this is now slightly open to question given that the one election on March 29th has now been confirmed. So now that could be my swansong and as above I will hand over April.

Your efforts are very much appreciated YellowPeril.
I can't be bothered with prediction competitions but I do love by-elections!
Thanks very much and best wishes for your personal circumstances

Back in the 1960s there was a Stamford Pete Best ward but it was quickly removed.

There was also a Stamford Jimmy Nicol ward but it was taken out of service after only about a week and most people have already forgotten it. no " likes" for this post unlike the previous two, because everyone has forgotten.
