I would remind the Hon Member of the Wales scrum-half by the name of Rupert StJohn Moon. Rupert Henry St John Barker Moon, if you please, who's about as Welsh as I am, having been born in Birmingham. Is alleged to have "Made in England" tattooed on his @rse. There was the memorable match when he was at 9 for Wales, while Dewi Morris, born in Crickhowell, was opposite him for England. His elder brother, Richard Moon, also a fine scrum-half, opted to be English, but never played for the England 1st XV, otherwise we could have had the interesting spectacle of two brothers playing in the same position for opposite international sides.I have a feeling that may have happened already. Bachop brothers?

" not their job" - Oh I wasn't trying to justify it for one moment - just not surprised

I could have done without having to scrap the preview for Bryn ward, which I had already written and sent off to Britain Elects. Coming in from a long day at 10:30pm on a Wednesday evening and then having to rewrite a column with twelve by-elections on it is not my idea of fun. [/rant]

AJS: Nice one- fifteenth century sounds quite late for a classic cruck house. I've never heard of one in use as a polling station though.

The cruck house looks pretty heavily restored to make into a useful building for the twenty-first century (and why not?) and such buildings were being put up for maybe as much as a thousand years before the fifteenth century, and that's about as late as it could possibly be.I imagine there will have been a lot of archaeological work at the time of restoration to produce a date?
Half a lifetime ago I used to teach building history so I'm quite interested.

I've visited two of the polling stations just now in Stowe and there are three ballot boxes, one for the district council, one for the city council, and one for a referendum on a local planning issue. Turnout is said to be "good", although no figures were available. Apparently the votes aren't being counted until tomorrow.
