I think it was the 2001 election when it was calculated that Mark Field had won Cities of London and Westminster with the lowest percentage of the registered electorate for any MP. That was the lowest in England. There were a few lower in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Lowest of all was Moray (17.4%). Highest in 2001 were Belfast West (45.5%) and Blaenau Gwent (42.8%). All the percentages are listed in Election 2001 - The Official Results published by the Electoral Commission.

In the past funerals were generally held a lot sooner after death than is the case today. One exception though would be if a Muslim MP died as Islamic funerals often take place the same day or the day after death.

Any chance of voting reform in this country was killed by the Labour Party actively murdering AV at the 2011 referendum.

That's hardly accurate, though would presumably make the ghost of the late member for Boro happy.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family of Sir Stuart Bell. His sudden death generates a by election and it will be interesting because local people seem to want a new kind of MP - someone who has the genuine desire to help rebuild and reshape the town rather than have a Westminster career. I suspect most candidates will want a Westminster career rather than a tough, grimy battle of a job. If anyone is interested in following the Middlesbrough by-election from a very informed local's perspective...I will be running my own non-partisan blog on the by-election and it's candidates. My first post is here: newmiddlesbrough.blogspot.co.uk/I have the inside scoop on people ready to declare interest...

I'd like to ask you (a) what you think the chances are of Ray Mallon standing and (b) what the chances would be of him winning if he did and how well you think he'd do.

Hi Trident. Yes I do agree that the role of an MP has traditionally been that of a legislator - the world tho is changing fast. Electing just legislators has not worked for Middlesbrough (or possibly anywhere) and people now seek a character who can show leadership, vision and balls for the benefit of the town. There is a cross-over of roles here between this and the elected Mayor but they are different roles.
Andy.

Hi Andyjas.
Good questions...
I think that Ray Mallon may stand - sorry...that's not helpful! I would put the chances of him standing at only 30% tho - I am surprised that he hasn't applied for the Police Commissioner role (tho he has half a day left to apply and announce!).
I think that he would be a good MP though I think his knowledge of national and international issues may not be as strong as it could be - but his strengths involve a willingness to act in the medium term interests of the town - even when it contradicts short term public opinion. This is a big plus.

Just read that Richard Moss of BBC Politics Show says Ray Mallon WILL stand if he is not satisfied with the quality of [Labour] candidates. He doesn't want a "chancer" parachuted in...

I would have thought Labour will go for a local candidate in this one anyway, but we'll see........

The build up to the Middlesbrough by-election has led to trouble between elected mayor Ray Mallon and Middlesbrough South MP Tom Blenkinsop. It was reported today in the North East newspaper, Sunday Sun. My blog covers the spat and suggests who's right: Http://newmiddlesbrough.blogspot.com

Some people might work in offices where Blogspot addresses are blocked, Andy, you might be worth posting the content here. This is a message board, after all.

BNP will certainly be putting a candidate forward. They will capitalise on protests against a 75-ft four-storey mosque being built, although this was several months back. They have support in the area though.
