As you know Pete, it isn't possible to take peerages away. I agree that maybe it should be.

Surely Pete you wouldn't want to break 1000 years of English history by taking peerages away? :-)

Life peerages aren't proper peerages anyway. 1000 years of English history was binned by the same twat who gave this vile individual a peerage in the first place

Often the latter two possibilities are excuses given for the first two (and also the fourth) possibilities on the list. I think it depends heavily on whether you have a previous public record on the matter. Someone who makes their first public statement that the EU is the greatest issue in British politics in announcing their move to UKIP just doesn't convince. Someone with a track record of speaking up about the issue, maybe membership of Better Off Out, or even just having made some tweets or blog comments about it, is more believable as someone who has reassessed which party they believe is the best vehicle for their aims. The same for other issues.

Life Peerages Act 1958 was passed under the government of Harold Macmillan. After an ad hoc creation, life peerages for senior judges to enable them to join the judicial work of the House of Lords were instituted by Disraeli in the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876. If you want to get more deeply involved then read up on the creation of baronies by writ, which was almost always treated as a life tenure (if that) until 1604.

David is of course right, baronies by writ were often life peerages and peerages were regularly removed by people who had fallen out of favour of the monarch.

Sarah Dineage Conservative councillor for Milton ward in Portsmouth (sister of Caroline Dineage, Tory MP for Gosport and daughter of TV presenter Fred Dineage) defects to Lib Dems. She is not restanding in her seat next week.
It was just a matter of time...

Former MP Teresa Gorman, from Conservative to UKIP. Personally I was surprised she was still in the Tories.

Thats sly on polling day and group leader too. Had he been campaigning for his ward colleague up until today? I'm not sure any serious political party would welcome someone with such a ridiculous haircut

Frankly I find his reasoning rather poor. Scythes the party in half though, and I gather they've lost the good half.

As he got any justification apart from immaturity for kicking those who voted for him in the teeth .

As he got any justification apart from immaturity for kicking those who voted for him in the teeth . I'm sure EAL will have some justification Interestingly I'm wondering whether we're starting to see a possible side effect of younger people who joined the Greens first and not having been a member of Labour initially like ~40% of the membership. Personally I'd never go back, but if I hadn't been a member? Slim chance I could be tempted by the idea?
