I recall my first visit to Ayr in 1998 when I went to watch newly relegated Hibs in a 3-3 draw at Somerset Park with Ayr United. It was like stepping back into the 1950s. The stadium was crumbling terraces with a leaking and rusting covers over parts. It was pouring with rain throughout
Ayr United were owned at the time by Bill Barr of Barr Construction. They had rebuilt half the stadia in Scotland including Celtic Park and Easter Road. Somerset Park had obviously never trembled from the rumbling of a Barr Construction machine.
Amid all the decay and corruption at Somerset Park was a 'Vote Scottish Conservatives' poster which seems also to have been around since the 1950s.
An economist is someone who solves problems you didn't know you had in a way you don't understand.
