Not quite sure why so many called this wrong. There has been a long-term improvement in Labour's position in this constituency with St Peter's & Graiseley returning to their pre-2007 position as utterly safe Labour wards, Park transitioning from being a safeish Tory ward to being a totally safe Labour ward with a Tory minority, and Penn & Merry Hill transitioning from being very safe Tory to very marginal Tory, at best. Although the 2 Tettenhall wards are still safe Tory it remains the case that this is now a constituency with 3 safe Labour wards, 2 safe Tory ones, and 2 marginals, and if Labour gets its vote out in its strongest areas it's always going to be hard for the Tories to win, though clearly not impossible if their national lead is high enough. I always felt that once the Tory lead descended into single figures percentage-wise in the country this seat was likely to stay Labour, though obviously not at the beginning of the campaign when the Tory lead was so much higher.
There is no doubt that Eleanor Smith is one of the dimmest creatures in parliament, even against the impressive opposition of the likes of Liam Fox, David Tredinnick and Diane Abbott. As a Brummie born and bred (or more accurately Smethwick - I am not a purist), and with strong connections to the area still, I have asked one or two of my Labour voting relatives and friends in the area what they think of this fuss. The only answer I received was that she is a moron who needs to be taaken to one side to have the history of the Black Country explained. And if that does not work she should be deselected.
It is a rare fool that can annoy so many of her natural voters within a month of election.
