What, no party labels? How disappointing. I was hoping for a lefty battle between the three main Canadian communist parties (the revisionists, the Stalinists and the Maoists) and perhaps some sort of reincarnated version of the Rhinoceros Party. Still, if it's by FPTP it could be an interesting split.

That's a bit like parliamentary election results in Papua New Guinea, where there is a different candidate or party for each tribe / valley / language / village.

Still, if it's by FPTP it could be an interesting split. You're aware of the Rhino Party but not how strict the separation of the three layers of government is in Canada? Parties have to register separately at federal and provincial level. Some provinces don't allow party labels at all, whilst those that do (such as BC and Québec) tend to involve only nebulous quasi-ideological shells and fleeting ad hoc personalist vehicles for the main mayoral candidates. I believe some municipalities in Ontario are thinking of moving to AV if the provincial government will let them, but AFAIK most council and mayoral elections in that country still take place by FPTP. That's a bit like parliamentary election results in Papua New Guinea, where there is a different candidate or party for each tribe / valley / language / village. This still appears to be the case, but results there don't seem as random since the country moved to a 'limited preferential' system 14 years ago. |
