Burnley lib Dems seem to be up for it and are fancying themselves taking 4 out of the 6 Burnley seats with labour losing both Burnley cabinet members- that said padiham to UKIP
The Lib Dems do have problems of their own, after deselecting Margaret Brindle in Burnley Rural. She may well stand as an Independant. However Jeff Sumner should retain his Division in Burnley South West, despite his 136 majority last time. Labour Cabinet member, Tony Martin, looks vulnerable to the Lib Dems in Burnley Central West with his majority of 7 ! Labour's Terry Burns should retain his Burnley North East spot, although his main opponent Gordon Birtwistle, Burnley's previous MP, is popular and well known.
Burnley Central East will stay Labour, as there was a by-election there only last November. The previous Councillor, Misfar Hassan, resigned in disgust on learning that he had been deselected for May, and Sobia Malik, sister of the former Dewsbury MP, Shahid Malik was duly elected. She had only been elected a Borough Councillor 18 months previously & there is some speculation that MP Julie Cooper's position as the Labour Candidate for 2020 is in question.
The final Division is Padiham & Burnley West, where Labour Cabinet member, Marcus Johnstone is defending a majority of 954. It would be extraordinary if UKIP's Alan Hosker or Lib Dem Mark Payne could even come close to defeating him. Hosker has established a good reputation for getting things done in his 2 years as a Borough Councillor, and Payne is one of those rare beasts, a Lib Dem " Brexiteer " !
It should be interesting...
