When I hear "Kardashian" I find myself wondering what Marx Brothers film was set in Kardashia. Was it Duck Soup or the other one? The one with the not-mirror. The Wikipedia entry for "Kardashian" has the warning "Not to be confused with Cardassian" - ie the Star Trek characters. Believe it or not, but my ex did that. I'm a Star Trek fan whereas she isn't, and she's Keeping Up With etc fan whereas I'm not.

For the last two days, on and off, I've been putting into Excel the by-election results from 2005 to 2010. This included, of course, Haltemprice and Howden, a handful of Scottish seats, Sedgfield and for many of us who post here, memories of the early version of this forum. Crunching these numbers brought up some interesting observations, particularly the sheer number of candidates through the five years (81 rows of them). Some parties who appear very often, particularly the BNP, barely exist at all now. Anyhoo, the top ten figures for the top 10 totals at the 2005 general election and the subsequent byelections are... Party | Total Vote at 2005 General | Ranking | Total Vote in all 05-10 by-elections | Party | Labour | 209,393 | 1 | 127,422 | Labour | Conservative | 150,834 | 2 | 120,711 | Conservative | Lib Dems | 119,750 | 3 | 87,360 | Lib Dems | SNP | 36,604 | 4 | 41,386 | SNP | Peter Law Ind BG | 20,505 | 5 | 12,543 | David Davies Ind | M Martin (Speaker) | 15,153 | 6 | 10,175 | Green (EW & Scot) | UKIP | 6,828 | 7 | 9,434 | UKIP | Green (EW & Scot) | 6,415 | 8 | 5,691 | BNP | Scottish Socialist | 4,681 | 9 | 2,687 | English Democrat | Reg Keys | 4,252 | 10 | 1,885 | Ind P Gittins |

I don't wish to be too discouraging, but interesting is not the word I would use for these facts.

But maybe I need to have more of a statistician's brain with these. There's a lot to be crunched from looking at how parties fare at by-elections compared to the constituencies at the general election, and seeing how some parties come into their own at by-elections and how it compares to previous sessions. From this year's session, the Tories are ahead of Labour on votes cast at the general election but far behind them at the by-elections. That is of interest.

Surely you'd look at vote share for those purposes, rather than raw votes? Since by-elections have such low turnouts compared to generals?

10 parties/candidates have fought both constituencies and subsequent by-elections in this 2015-2020 parliament. This does NOT include Zac Goldsmith whose candidature slips through my Pivot Table by not standing as a party candidate in the Richmond Park by-election.
This ranking is from the most gained to most lost from the total share of the vote in the constituencies fought at the 2015 by-election to the total share of the vote in the subsequent by-elections. These totals do not include Copeland or Stoke on Trent as they would skew the calculations (adding to the total vote share at the general election without a by-election yet being fought)
1. Lib Dems +9.69 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 6.92%) 2. Labour +2.73 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 34.85%) 3. Plaid Cymru +0.66 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 3.6%) 4. Lincolnshire Independents +0.41 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 0.8%) 5. English Democrats +0.41 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 0.04%) 6. National Health Action +0.03 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 0.15%) 7. Give Me Back Elmo +0.02 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 0.01%) ----- 8. Green -1.88 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 3.30%) 9. UKIP -3.94 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 12.8%) 10. Conservative -17.71 (total vote share across all affected constituencies at the general election 40.0%)

Somerset County, Pennsylvania present the cutting edge of electoral technology I suspect it's more high-tech than the counting methods used for County Council elections here in the original Somerset!

In October 1974 the Conservative majority in Kinross and West Perthshire fell from 8,082 (29.79%) to 53 (0.20%).

.. the retirement of one Alec Douglas-Home being obviously the major factor in that change It's still massive, had they lost it, it would've been the safest seat lost by the Conservatives in a GE since 1945 and before 1997.

Somewhere in this thread, there is reference to guanches and Silbo Gomero.
I'm in the bar of the Travelodge at Birmingham Airport. There are some Canarians doing the whistling stuff but it sounds very odd in such a small space.

O/T If you have some free time don't forget to take a ride on the people-mover train between the airport and the station. A useless fact is that between 1984 and 1995 it was the world's first and only MagLev system, but they had to retire it when the spare parts required to service it became either too expensive or unavailable.
