We’ll the Labour Leader denouncing the candidate in the Commons was pretty morally repugnant I thought… I did hear at the time that apparently Foot confused Tatchell with someone from a far left party.... It was theorised that he might have confused him with Tariq Ali (who Jeremy Corbyn was trying to make a member of Hornsey CLP at the time), or possibly Peter Taaffe of Militant. But the 'Foot got confused' theory does not stand up. What is more plausible is that Robert Mellish, who knew Foot well from decades as fellow MPs and who had worked with him when they were Chief Whip and Leader of the House, had been considerably exaggerating Tatchell's political position. Also Stan Cohen (Leeds South East MP) had met Foot that morning to ask him for some show that would convince him not to defect to the SDP.

Interesting figure, Mellish. In some respects exactly the figure people tend to assume, and in some others (probably more on balance) completely different. Interesting also in terms of urban history as well as political history.

if you mean being a useless opposition party yes, if you mean doing something morally repugnant which is what I thought you meant then no. Yes, I was bundling together all of the reasons to perhaps wish it had not been...

Good for her. If reselected she would have a good chance at the General Election. But whatever her independent qualifications, it simply wouldn't wash at a by-election caused by her partner's actions.

"My only regret was that, in the tumult of the campaign, I was unable take part in interviews with the national press. That left a huge vacuum into which this sexist narrative became set." What was stopping her? There was a steady stream of journos in the constituency throughout the whole campaign. Ben Habib spoke to them, Gen Kitchen spoke to them (apart from when she had diplomatic flu on £28bn-day). Catastrophic misjudgment from either her or her CCHQ handlers.

Unless the Tories do quite a bit better than currently seems likely, but that wouldn't be down to her anyway.
