That's an amazingly straight line slicing through the middle which is now reinforced by the party divide...

Stockton Heath - 2 LD hold LD 1210*/1018* Lab 634 Con 537/440 Culcheth, Glazebury & Croft - 3 Lab gain from Con Lab 1763/1694/1691 Con 1457/1374/1256 Culcheth is the home of Andy Burnham. It's normally quite a good hunting ground for the Tories as it's mega posh.

It's normally quite a good hunting ground for the Tories as it's mega posh. For the last Conservative councillor not to be there or in Lymm is extraordinary. You'd put good money on them being shut out of those two places meaning they're off the council completely.

This is in some ways an outstanding result. Although Warrington hasn't issued a s114 notice, it's been in very significant financial trouble over its extreme indebtedness; its external auditors issued a statutory recommendation a few years ago, and more recently it has been criticised for 'weaknesses' in its accounts. But unlike Woking, Thurrock, Croydon and Slough, the administration has been re-elected and with an increased majority.

Is the sole remaining Tory councillor the same person that held a byelection in that ward by just 3 votes in late 2022?

I don't see in the list of candidates, the following Cllrs Changing wards Jane Whalen (Lab) from Great Sankey North and Whittle Hall to Appleton ward. Labour is a poor third in Appleton (Con-LD marginal) Helen Charlotte Milner (Lab) from Orford to Lymm North & Thelwall (a LD ward with Labour in third place) Hilary Cooksey (Lab) from Poplars and Hulme to Rixton & Woolston (a Con-Lab split ward. Should win in current climate) Siobhan Maureen Carr (Lab) from Westbrook to Burtonwood & Winwick (a Labour seat) Brian Gallagher (Lab) from Westbrook to Penketh & Cuerdley (a former Labour seat won by Independents last time) Peter John Walker (LD) from Stockton Heath to Appleton (can win in Appleton too) Jane Whalen finished last in Appleton. Helen Milner beat the Conservatives in Lymm North & Thelwall. Anyway she was 1,000 votes away from the third LibDem. Hilary Cooksey was elected in Rixton & Woolston which remains a split ward (from 2 Con and 1 Lab to 2 Lab to 1 Con) Siobhan Carr lost to an Independent in Burtonwood & Winwick (now a split Lab-Ind ward) Brian Gallagher lost in Penketh & Cuerdley (4th, 100 votes behind the second Independent) Peter Walker easily won on the Appleton seats.

Though the pattern has generally been that the electoral damage isn't seen until you've had not just an s114 notice but also huge council tax rises to stabilise the ship.

The FT are reporting today that the officers refused to hand over information to Grant Thornton the auditors. Who have resigned.
