Eastleigh Central Ward CONSTABLE, Josh (LAB & CO) 774 CULLEY Alexander Conrad (REFORM) 184 IRISH Wayne (LIB DEM) 866 (E) SAXENA Yogesh (CON) 319 STAPLETON, Jack (GREEN) 175 Josh Constable in Eastleigh Central really is the best hope Labour have of regaining a toehold on the council - he achieved Labour's best vote share in years with 33.4% and a 6.5% swing from the Lib Dems. I would guess (and hope) that the local party put a massive amount of work into the ward, as nothing sparks a party's wider growth as much as a councillor.

I would guess (and hope) that the local party put a massive amount of work into the ward, as nothing sparks a party's wider growth as much as a councillor. We have been here before though in the predecessor seats to this one, not too long ago. And that was with a former councillor. Labour's problem is that the next borough elections are when they've almost certainly been in government for at least 18 months (ditto elsewhere on this thirds cycle), and if any Lib Dem local party is ruthless at exploiting perceived shortcomings of national government in their locality, it's Eastleigh. You are right though, no seat on the council makes more sense for Labour (except Bishopstoke, but Indies are in there and Lib Dems haven't completely given up there) so the local party has nothing to lose. Just expect nothing and you won't be disappointed...
