Ecuador is holding presidential and parliamentary elections today. If necessary, there will be a run-off for the latter on 7 April.
The incument president, Rafael Correa, of the socialist PAIS (Patria Altiva I Soberana—Proud and Sovereign Fatherland) Alliance is the clear front-runner, owing to the opposition's inability to unite behind a single candididate. Correa's nearest rival (trailing by over 35%) is banker Guillermo Lasso of Creating Opportunities, a right-wing party which stands for political and economic liberalism. There will be 137 members elected to the National Assembly.
