This is a rematch of Jason McCartney (MP 2010-17) and former headteacher Thelma Walker who won unexpectedly by 915 votes on a very large 5.5% swing two years ago. Both main candidates are very strong and well known local figures, and I expect the campaign to be personal and nasty in many respects.
The Brexit Party are standing here and topped the poll in the constituency in the euros, there was no UKIP last time. The Lib Dems will of course have a candidate and I can’t see the local Green Party standing aside as they never seem to at any level in Kirklees.
One telling factoid of just how polarised things were here in 2017, is that the first and second place vote scores represent the most and second-most votes ever polled by a candidate in the constituency.
2017- Labour - 28,818 - 47.8% Tory - 27,903 - 46.1 Lib Dem - 2,494 - 4.1% Green - 892 - 1.5 Independent 313 - 0.5%
