Ive heard there has been a whole lot of kerfuffle in the selection of the Labour candidate in Fairfield. From what I gather a candidate won the vote of local party members, but the Croydon Labour party announced someone else as being selected. I don't know the full ins and outs, but a friend of mine who attended the vote is rather confused and annoyed. Equally I don't know the details, but it may be worth mentioning that the person selected by the membership vote is a Corbyn supporter (José Joseph, street market trader), and the official candidate imposed by the local leadership is not (Carragher Skipper). The leadership of Croydon Labour Party is essentially Blairite. Wasn't Skipper once the chair of Croydon momentum, but then resigned when she was selected in Addiscombe East?

I don't know the full ins and outs, but a friend of mine who attended the vote is rather confused and annoyed. The Conservatives are campaigning hard in the ward, and the candidate (Jayde Edwards, age 20, single mum with a 4-year-old son) has the practical support of several people from a community group she's involved in. When we did the campaign launch last week, about 45 people turned out for the initial canvassing/leafleting session. By "community group" do you mean the iffy evangelical group Mario and co have been creating links with. Her selection has also had question marks hanging over it from what I gather, luckily Labour have messed things up to much higher degree. Either way, I doubt internal wranglings will have much effect on the result...

The SOPN won't be published until tomorrow, but there probably won't be any big surprises in the list of candidates (four main parties and maybe insignificant independent or UKIP candidates). London Borough of Croydon Fairfield ward by-election 7th November 2019 Candidates: Jayde Edwards (Conservative) Andrew Rendle (Liberal Democrat) Mark Samuel (Independent) Carragher Skipper (Labour) Esther Sutton (Green) Heather Twidle (Women's Equality Party) Mark Samuel has stood in several local and parliamentary elections in Croydon as an Independent or for the People's Choice party, but always with minimal numbers of votes. The two previous ward by-elections he stood in were in 2007 and 2009, when he got 9 and 13 votes respectively. Andrew Rendle was Labour councillor for Ashburton ward 2014-18.

Darren Macey PC, Ynyshir ward, Rhondda Cynon Taff council has resigned to take up a post that disqualifies him. That's inefficient. He didn't need to make the effort to resign if he was going to be disqualified anyway.

It’s also arguably better optics for both the individual and the Party to say he resigned rather than he was disqualified, as people who aren’t aware of politically restricted jobs are likely to read “disqualified” and wrongly assume some wrongdoing on the part of the individual.
