Peter Harris, former London Regional Controller for Ukip (he was one of the anti-Bolton resignations last month), Ukip to Conservatives big hitter?? surely " top kipper".... Does that make his house a Top-Kippi Palace? I'll get my Melina Mercouri.

Conversely (and I may be corrected) but I don't think many people in Gloucester (roughly half the size of MK) consider it more than a big town, notwithstanding official status; though if the facilities and population of Cheltenham were added I think they would. My admittedly rather hazy childhood recollections are that Gloucester made quite a big deal of its city status back in the 1970s. Part of this was undoubtedly one-upmanship with neighbouring Cheltenham, of course.....

It's perhaps surprising considering the rate of defections elsewhere, but as we near the May elections all of the UKIP councillors elected in London in 2014 as far as I'm aware are still in UKIP. Yes I noted this commenting on the Havering thread recently (as that is where the majority elected then were) and of the 7 elected in that borough 6 remain (1 resigned and the by-election was won by Labour). Three in Bexley and two in Bromley are still in the party

Perhaps the start of another round of blood letting in the Conservative group? They have twice split down the middle and lost control in the past.

She was the councillor who tried to get the council to abandon the use of titles for women councillors only ie referring to them as Cllr. Mrs Bogbrush rather than just Cllr. Bogbrush. Lost by one vote and I think those who voted against were from the Tories.

Sounds like she’s been wasting valuable council time and that we are better off without.

Do you mean that they didn't just refer to councillors as "Councillor Surname" or "Councillor Firstname Surname"? How on Earth could anybody have ever possibly thought it was necessary to insert extra bits like "Mrs"? This is almost as bad as Councillor Rooke's impertinent demands. (q.v. the Dress Code thread).

Councils usually do that - but only if the woman is question wishes it. Incidentally, current Tooting MP Rosena Allin Khan (being a narcisstic swimwear model at heart) demanded to be known as Cllr Dr Mrs Allin Khan (MP). The previous mayor (rip big Jim madden) used to wind her up by always getting the words in various different (and incorrect) orders.

I think Henry Blofeld has a story about his debut on Test Match Special on India's tour of England when the visiting summariser was the Maharajah of Baroda, who wanted on his first mention ("So Trevor Bailey is leaving us and will hand over to...") to be given his full name and all royal and military titles including decorations and MP.

We (by which I mean the minority of councillors who had noticed the arrival of the 20th Century) did away with this Cllr Mrs xxx nonsense in the 90s - possibly the late 80s*. I was astonished to learn that Newcastle BC still insist on inserting Mrs (or Miss) when referring to female councillors. Seems utterly archaic to me. * We had some senior, respected (and elderly) councillors who might have objected to this change. But didn't. Had they wanted to continue as Cllr Mrs xxxx we wouldn't of course have objected.

Ferndown Town Council refers to "Cllr Mrs. so-and-so". The main reason seems to be husband and wife teams on the council and the need to distinguish between them.

I guess using titles is regarded as more formal/respectful.

My neighbours (husband and wife) growing up had the same first name. Weirdly they also had the same surname from birth.

Burnley BC always used to refer to "Mr Councillor Jones" or "Miss Councillor Brown". Used to get stuff addressed to me in that rubbish way on joint committees etc clerked by Burnley. It may be that they still do since the last communication I had from them addressed me as "Lord Councillor Greaves". In Pendle I am (rightly) called Councillor Greaves.
