Seems all the Tory councillors are deserting the sinking ship. I can't remember the last time there were this many defections away from any given party (baring the UKIP collapse that is). Out of interest, have you defected or were you elected without a party label? When I ran for the parish council, I labelled myself independent deliberately.

There were also a lot of Tory defections to UKIP during UKIP's rise. Before that, you probably have to go back to the mass defections from Labour to the SDP in the early 80s for an example of a clear mass trend of defections away from a single party. Having said that, I think we need to wait a bit longer until deciding whether this is a notable trend, or whether it's just a blip.

I was elected unopposed to a council that is not organised on political lines and has no official party groupings. As far as the council is concerned, I always was and always will be a independent. I will probably stand as an independent next year. I still work closely with other councillors who are UKIP members as we have a lot in common as individuals.

Has someone in Darlington defected? I can’t see anything about a defection but the council leader’s standing down tomorrow after 27 years as Leader/Deputy Leader, could that be it?

I talked to Tory colleagues on my council who flagged up Northamptonshire years ago as a council to watch for economic catastrophe. Seems like they knew what they were talking about...

Yes, when I first moved to Milton Keynes in 2013 it was mentioned to me. South Northants was also rumoured to be in trouble.

"and Torygraph columnist and Taxpayers Alliance groupie" could easily have been added, tbh Also a classic case of "I thought they left ages ago?"

As Transport Minister Tom got it repainted and on the first day turned up in overalls with a bucket of paint and a brush for what made one of the more effective photos on our next election leaflet.

Reported on Twitter that ten Tory councillors on Gravesham DC have split from the ruling group. Almost inevitably, deselection shenanigans appear to be involved.
