Article in La Stampa quotes Di Maio as saying: "Let's do as in Germany - reasoning with his staff - We sign a contract on the program. The relative majority party names the Prime Minister, the government partner takes the most important ministries ". In the government of of Angela Merkel, the Social Democrats have conquered Finances, Foreign Affairs, Work, Environment and the Family. According to the calculations of the M5S, Salvini would have economic or economic development, the Interior Ministry (for the immigration campaign), defense, agriculture and maybe transport....". Salvini is quoted as saying "It's not a case of "Me as Prime Minister or death". Somewhat dramatic terminology but seems the League have realised they are in second place. A large faction of the PD are prepared to back MS5 apparently. Thus far, except for presidency of one of the chambers, Berlusconi's crowd are being gradually sidelined. Hopefully I'm not telling anyone something they know but "...or death" has a very specific connotation in Italian political history- "Rome or Death" was Garibaldi's slogan as he attacked Rome.

I can't help but think that this is what Salvini wants. He is now master of the Right. He can let M5S jump into the PD's coffin, wait for it to go horribly wrong, and then make a concerted push at Sicily, Basilicata and up the east coast whilst M5S are in trouble and the PD are still trying to rise from the grave.

True.. but it may also be traditional northern arrogance at work. He thinks DiMaio is some southern rube and a political neophyte. That could be a mistake because DiMaio has performed exceptionally well so far considering how new he is to power. There is more to the M5S than just its frontman with some hardnosed political operators moving and shaking behind the arras. Salvini has hitched his wagon to the broken down old ass of Berlusconi and already sacrificed the Senate leadership to that cause. Looks like he has bet on the wrong old nag. How DiMaio squares Italy's (and M5S') interests with the arch EU PanDerers will be interesting to see... Maybe give the PD non-EU facing ministries... Railways anyone?

PD will elect its new permanent leader today.
The mandate the president had given (newly elected) President of the Senate Elisabetta Casaletti from FI to conduct exploratory talks expired yesterday as M5S still refuse to work with FI while Lega Nord refuse to ditch FI, and the two sides do not agree on much either.
The task will then pass to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Roberto Fico from M5S, which will open up for negotiations with PD (unless the president bypass normal procedure and skip Fico, but nothing indicates he will).
The grand coalition-ish centre-right/centre-left negotiations Berlusconi want will have to wait to after Fico is done.
EDIT: I wasn't up to date on this. Renzi has decided to stay on until a new government is formed to prevent a coalition with M5S, so the leadership election has been postponed.

Di Maio now has stated that the talks with League are over and that Salvini has "condemned himself to irrelevance" and a government with the centre-right is no longer viable. He wants to open talks with PD and says that if they fail the only alternative is new elections.

Di Maio is now putting maximum pressure on PD. "The leader of Italy’s largest party, Luigi Di Maio, called for new elections in June to break a deadlock in talks on forming a new government.“At this point, for me there is no other solution,” Di Maio said in a video statement on his Facebook page on Monday, blaming the center-left Democratic Party (PD) and the far-right League for refusing to cooperate with his 5Star Movement, which won the most votes in Italy’s inconclusive March 4 election."www.politico.eu/article/italy-5-star-movement-call-for-new-election/

It's difficult to see how a new election in Italy would break the deadlock between the parties.

It's difficult to see how a new election in Italy would break the deadlock between the parties. Likely not the point. Also, I posted this two posts above..

It's difficult to see how a new election in Italy would break the deadlock between the parties. Why? The CentroDestra had gained strongly in Molise and yesterday +14%.

The coalition talks between M5S and PD have failed. Though discontent with Renzi is growing within PD and some of his close allies (Maurizio Martina being the most prominent among them) have called for negotiations with M5S on a limited agreement to avoid news elections, which the right looks set to win.
The President has set tomorrow as the deadline for forming a government, otherwise he will appoint a caretaker government. He wants an overhaul of the electoral laws before he considers calling an election and refuse to call elections before the EU fiscal summit in late June.
Meanwhile M5S have demanded news elections ultimo June and the centre-right want elections in late summer/autumn, they also demand to lead a caretaker government.

Hungary, Poland, Malta, Italy, (Austria?), Greece ... the awkward squad are growing in numbers.. the UK might be missed in some quarters in Brussels.. This is quite a turnaround as it looked like a drift to another election just last week.
