curiouser and curiouser, do the local party just have a really good ground game or is there some local factor that labour is addressing (library/hospital cutbacks etc)? It's a pretty isolated sort of place and as we know they can be prone to odd results which you have to be local to understand. As andrewteale mentions in his preview there's a fair amount of mining heritage in the area (I recommend the lead mining museum at Nenthead) and while it would seem odd for that to suddenly appear in election results now it might be relevant that it isn't just an agricultural area. It isn't really that odd; the potential being there but work and good candidates required is common for that sort of place.

It isn't really that odd; the potential being there but work and good candidates required is common for that sort of place. Quite . In my book, and regardless of party, with work and good candidates anything is possible anywhere. There really should be nowhere where one party feels it has a God-given right to rule for ever, no places which must be Tory of right, or Labour or even Liberal Democrat. Just because one party has dominated as long as anyone can remember, it doesn't mean it always will. Indeed in those circumstances it is most vulnerable to change. Actually, in Alston it may be the brief intervention of the very young Lib Dem candidate last time, pulling off a shock win, had opened the floodgates for Labour to step in this time. It is not unusual for Lib Dems to perform this service, because they tend to believe the impossible.
